About

I’m Rachel – and yes, I measure rooms for fun.

Old habit. Ten years as an architect will do that to you. I still can’t walk into a space without mentally calculating square footage and wondering why they put the outlet there. But somewhere along the way, I stopped caring about blueprints and started obsessing over how a room actually makes you feel when you walk in.

Turns out, that’s a very different thing.

I spent a decade designing buildings – offices, retail spaces, the occasional sleek modern home. I was good at it. But I kept finding myself more interested in what happened after construction. The furniture. The lighting. The weird little corner that nobody knew what to do with. The details that turn a house into a home.

So at 36, I made a choice that surprised everyone – including me. I left architecture and dove headfirst into interior design and styling.

Best decision I ever made.

Why I Started This Site

Here’s what I learned from architecture: good design isn’t magic. It’s intention. It’s understanding why something works, not just copying what looks pretty on Instagram.

I started this blog because I wanted to share that perspective. Not just “here’s a cute living room” – but why it feels so good. What makes that kitchen flow. How lighting changes everything. The small decisions that most people overlook but completely transform a space.

I bring a slightly nerdy, analytical eye to interiors. But don’t worry – I promise to keep it fun and practical. No jargon, no pretentious design-speak. Just real ideas you can actually use.

What I Believe

Function first, always. A gorgeous room that doesn’t work for your life isn’t good design. It’s just a photo op.

Details matter more than big gestures. The right hardware, the perfect lamp height, the way light hits your countertop at 4 PM – these things add up.

Your home should support how you actually live. Not some fantasy minimalist lifestyle. YOUR life, with all its beautiful mess.

Good design is problem-solving. That awkward nook? The tiny bathroom? The kitchen with zero counter space? Those are puzzles, and I love puzzles.

A Little About My Life

  • I live in Seattle with my partner David (he builds furniture and yes, our home is full of his experiments) and our two cats, Frank and Mies. Yes, named after architects. I’m that person.
  • I drink my coffee black and way too hot. No patience for letting it cool.
  • My weekends involve a lot of wandering through salvage yards, estate sales, and oddly specific architectural bookshops.
  • I still sketch by hand before I do anything digital. Some habits stick.
  • I’ve learned more about design from traveling than from any class I ever took.
  • My home is modern but warm – lots of wood, natural light, and things I’ve collected over the years that tell a story.

What You’ll Find Here

I write about interiors through a slightly different lens. Yes, trends and pretty rooms – but also the thinking behind them. Why certain layouts work. How to make smart choices that last. The intersection of beautiful and functional.

I also use AI tools to help create imagery for this site. It lets me visualize ideas quickly and share inspiration that matches exactly what’s in my head. Every article is my own perspective, researched and written by me.
